The Alamosa City Council has approved revisions to the city’s outdoor lighting standards, aiming to create a more business-friendly environment while maintaining community aesthetics. This decision comes after feedback from local business owners and recommendations from the city’s development services staff.
In 2024, Alamosa adopted lighting codes aligned with DarkSky International standards to reduce light pollution. However, after evaluating the impact on local businesses, the council recognized the need for adjustments. Councilor Jan Vigil emphasized the council’s responsiveness, stating, “We made changes. We’re listening to people. We’re not ramrodding this down people’s throats.”
The revised regulations were discussed extensively during a work session on April 8 and received initial approval at the recent city council meeting. A public hearing is scheduled for May 20 to gather further community input before finalizing the changes.
Local business owners have expressed appreciation for the council’s willingness to reconsider the lighting standards. The updated regulations aim to strike a balance between reducing light pollution and supporting the operational needs of businesses in Alamosa.
Residents and business owners are encouraged to participate in the upcoming public hearing to share their perspectives on the proposed changes.
